Overview

12 Grimmauld Place was a wizarding house, the ancestral home of the House of Black, located in a Muggle street in London. The house was under a vast number of protective spells, including being Unplottable and later under a Fidelius Charm.

The house had been in the Black family for generations, and was where Sirius and Regulus Black grew up. After the deaths of Orion and Regulus Black, then Walburga Black 6 years later, the house passed to Sirius who was in Azkaban at the time.

The house remained unoccupied with the exception of Kreacher, the Black family House-Elf, for over ten years until Sirius escaped from Azkaban in 1993. After this, he moved back in, but the house was in desperate need of cleaning and updating, and was filled with Dark artefacts, boggarts, and doxies. This fell to members of the Order of the Phoenix and their children.

When Sirius died in 1996, the house passed to Harry Potter, Sirius' godson. The Order of the Phoenix continued to use the house as a safe house. When Albus Dumbledore - the Secret Keeper for the house - died in 1997, everyone who knew of the house became a Secret Keeper, including Severus Snape, thought to be a traitor. Thus, the house was abandoned by the Order, but used as a safe house briefly by Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley whilst hunting for horcruxes, and was the location of Slytherin's Locket, hidden by Regulus and Kreacher.

After the Second Wizarding War, it isn't known what happened to the house, but it presumably still belonged to Harry.
