Overview

While Muggles nowadays may only think of centaurs from Greek and Roman Mythology, these creatures are very much still in existence even if they no longer cross paths with non-magical folk. Centaurs live in herds that range from ten to fifty members. Under the current Ministry rulings, these herds reside within Ministry-allocated areas in forests to prevent accidental breaks to the Statute of Secrecy. A Centaur camp exists on the Hogwarts grounds, deep within the Forbidden Forest.

Centaurs opted to a 'Beast' classification despite having the communication skills and intelligence for 'Being'. This was entirely based on dark creatures sharing the 'Being' classification - they did not wish to be grouped with them. Centaurs are extrememly proud creatures that generally avoid all other creatures (magical or non-magical), and simply wish to be left alone. They also tend to reject the idea of even one of their own herd associating or helping other beings/creatures, especially if it could impact the herd. The XXXX rating was given due to the high levels of respect needed to approach and communicate with them, and the consequences of what could happen if you do upset the herd. Although centaurs do not intentionally attack the young or innocent, they have been known to attack or harm adult wizards (or other creatures) when the herd has felt threatened, or even simply disrespected.

Centaurs are a species of their own, not a blend of human and horse, despite their appearance. The head down to the torso (including the arms) is human. Everything below the torso down is that of a horse - including four horse legs and a tail. Centaurs come in all shapes, sizes, and colours. They also prefer to not wear clothing, although they may randomly be seen wearing jewelary, it is thought these items are made within the herd. These highly intelligent creatures are natural born seers, they are known to study astronomy and healing, and they are exceedingly skilled archers - often using their bows and arrows when the herd is threatened.
