Overview

Considered the darkest of Dark magic, a horcrux was a item in which a Dark witch or wizard had stored a shard of their soul, with the intention of being immortal. The methods of creating one are unclear, but it is known that the first step is damaging the soul by committing a murder, then encasing the damaged fragment in a receptacle. As long as the item remained in tact, they could live on.

The first horcrux was created by Herpo the Foul, and Lord Voldemort infamously created seven horcruxes, splitting his soul into eight. He also created two living horcruxes: Nagini the snake, and Harry Potter.

Horcruxes are difficult to destroy, but it is possible with basilisk venom or Fiendfyre.
