The Hogwarts acceptance letter, as implied by the name, was a letter sent to prospective students on or just before their 11th birthday, to invite or confirm their attendance at Hogwarts School. Children who displayed magic were identified by the Quill of Acceptance and documented in the Book of Admittance. From here, the role usually fell to the Deputy Headteacher to delegate the writing of the acceptance letters and ensure their safe delivery.

The letters were written in green ink and sealed with a wax crest. Also enclosed was a list of supplies for students for the upcoming year.
