Talking About Topics
Year 43 Week 1 - Edition #001 - Written by Oscar Edwards
Hello all you people! Welcome to yet another new article! Every other week I'll be selecting a topic that I just
can't stop reading and tell you all the things I love about it. Then, I'll interview one of the members of the topic and ask them a bunch of different questions about why they chose to write the things they did.
Joining me today for our VERY FIRST edition of talking about topics, I have Rafe Dawnstar, and Everly LaKulina, discussing their topic
Beneath the Tangled Branches. It is quite a treat that we've managed to get both of them here today! I had so so so many questions while reading, so I'm excited to finally have some answers!
To kick us off, I'll give all you lovely people a summary of Rafe and Everly's BEAUTIFUL topic, just in case you haven't had the chance to read it yet: What began as a midnight escape into the forest turned into something neither Everly nor Rafe could have expected—a collision of danger, vulnerability, and confessions that neither of them knew they were ready for, but both needed more than anything. For Everly, the forbidden thrill of the forest was about more than just curiosity—it was a place to test boundaries, hers and his. For Rafe, the forest had always been a refuge, a space to be alone with his thoughts. But when they crossed paths under the canopy of webs and moonlight, it became the place where their walls came down. The initial teasing and rivalry that defined their relationship gave way to honesty, fear, and finally, an undeniable connection. Faced with a Thornback Hatchling and the slow, creeping fear that comes with true danger, they saw each other not just as classmates or combatants in snarky exchanges—but as something much more vital. Rafe's instinct was to protect. Everly's was to stand her ground. And in those moments, something shifted permanently. She saw that his strength wasn’t just physical—it was quiet, loyal, unwavering. He saw that her fire wasn’t just rebellion—it was heart, determination, and hidden courage that had been waiting for someone to see it without flinching. Together, they didn’t just fight off the beast—they burned through the tension that had built between them for months. Everly’s injury added another layer of vulnerability—one she rarely allowed herself to show. But Rafe never made her feel small. He lifted her, literally and emotionally, treating her with the tenderness she secretly longed for but never admitted. In his arms, the world felt quieter, safer, warmer. And for Rafe, who had braced himself for people to leave, for things to fall apart, that walk back to the castle felt like proof that maybe—just maybe—someone would choose to stay. Their return was met not with punishment but with an amused, if weary, acceptance from the school nurse. A little lie covered the truth, but the real secret wasn’t where they’d been—it was what had happened between them. The kisses, the promises, the shared breath under the moonlight. By the time Rafe had to leave her bedside, he didn’t feel like the boy who had snuck into the forest alone anymore. He felt like someone who had found something rare—someone who saw him, and let him see her too. And as Everly drifted off to sleep, his hand still warm from holding hers, both of them knew something had changed. Not just in their dynamic—but in who they were willing to be for each other. Not just rivals. Not just troublemakers. Something real.
Hello and welcome, Everly and Rafe! I am so excited to have you both here today! I have a couple of questions for both of you, and my first one goes out to Rafe. So, tell me Rafe You often try to stay strong and guarded—what made you willing to open up to Everly the way you did?
I think it was the way I felt about her. I was very confused at the time, on why I felt different around her, why I wanted to constantly be around her, to revel in her company, make her smile, just be with her. And so in the forest, as we were there together, all alone, it felt right. I wanted to confess. I needed to, in a way. Not a lot of people get to see that side of me, and I don't think they ever will. I try keep that part of me hidden, however best I can, but that night, I needed to let her in. It felt like the right thing to do, and I haven't regretted it since.
Aww, that's so sweet. I'm glad it seemingly went well for you, and I can't wait to see where it goes next! My next question is for Everly! What was going through your mind when you chose to trust Rafe with your safety instead of immediately defending yourself?
I'm actually not sure, from the second I met Rafe there was just something about him that told me I was safe with him. While getting killed by something in the forest would suck, I don’t really fear it as much as I fear not being able to know where I have people. And besides, he had been my rival for like a while at that point so I knew exactly how capable he is.
I definitely know what you mean with not wanting to lose the people you have. I might not have very many friends in school, but I'd be devestated to lose them! Rafe, you're up again! What did carrying Everly through the forest symbolize for you beyond just a physical act?
It was an honour of sorts, a responsibility, i think, that I'd been craving for the longest time. To care. For her. I don't think I would've understood at the time, but it meant a lot to me, that she trusted me enough to let me carry her. I've never had anyone do that before. It's always been me, just riding the waves alone. Well, until Hogwarts. I got settled in, and then I met her, and everything changed again. I honestly didn't think I'd survive. Everyone here knew how to rely on others, I'd always grown up rather isolated. But that night I felt connected again, and for her to trust me enough to carry her back while she was injured meant a lot. It honestly meant much more than I could ever explain. Almost made me feel like I made a difference. To her.
You guys are just too cute. I'm glad you were able to find each other in the waves. My last question goes back to Everly! What fears or hopes did you wrestle with when you decided to let him carry you out of the forest?
Well a tiny part of me was questioning if he could, not really because he is not strong, because he really is, but because just like I feed off the challenge of proving myself, I do think Rafe gets a little boost from having to prove himself, hehe. But also, I feared that it was a dream, because I have never before seen myself growing old with anyone, never seen myself as someone who would care about another human being above myself. It was overwhelming, but safe, I needed him to help me without judgement, and he did. I still think about that night a lot, and I would not trade it for anything. Getting hurt, and being flodded with thoughs I am still not completely sure of was a price I will happily pay a thousand times more just for him.
Oh wow. How absolutely beautiful. I love seeing people let their walls down and give themselves fully to the people they love.
Well guys, that wraps up our interview with Everly and Rafe! Thank you both so much for joining us today, and for letting me but your amazing topic under my microscope!
