Welcome to Back to School! Each edition of this blog will focus on the major wizarding schools of the world, with our sixth edition exploring Mahoutokoro School of Magic.
Although Mahoutokoro has the smallest student body, you'll find you're there for the longest duration, with students attending from the age of 7, right up until they're 17. Younger students attend daily and return home on giant storm petrels. Once they reach the age of 11, they board at the palace.
The school itself can be found in the tropical waters of Southern Japan, at the summit of Minami Iwo Jima, a volcanic island. The palace is made of a translucent white jade (nephrite).
The school is well-known for its Quidditch prowess - a sport introduced by a band of Hogwarts students who were trying to circumnavigate the globe on their brooms but crashed and were rescued by staff from the school. From then on, the school developed a fearsome reputation for the sport, which is credited to training in all conditions, including tropical storms, and having to avoid turbulent weather, Bludgers, and Muggle planes from nearby airports. Students from Mahoutokoro are also considered all-round excellent students who follow strict rules and regulations - partially enforced by their school robes. Students begin with pink robes which grow and change colour as they develop their skills. Gold robes indicate the top students in the school, while white robes denote a student who has broken the Japanese Wizard's Code or practiced the Dark Arts. Students whose robes turn white are expelled.
Mahoutokoro has produced many fine wizards and witches, particularly Quidditch players and flyers like Chiyo Kogawa, Minaka Hirakata, Keiko Takahashi, Noriyuki Sato, Yoshihiro Suzuki, Ryotaro Tanaka, Tamotsu Iwamoto, and Shizuka Watanabe. However, the school also produced wizarding inventor Dai Ryusaki, and the infamous Dark Wizard and assassin Kazuhiro Shiratori.
