Welcome to Back to School! Each edition of this blog will focus on the major wizarding schools of the world, with our third edition covering Castelobruxo.
Pronounced cass - tell - o - broo - shoo, Castelobruxo is in the rainforests of Brazil and accepts students from all across the South American continent. It isn't known whether it's the only wizarding school in South America, but it's certainly the best-known and has a popular exchange programme with the European wizarding schools, allowing students from Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, and Durmstrang to learn more about the magical wildlife.
The school itself, like Hogwarts, appears as a ruin to Muggles, but to magical folk it is an imposing, golden stone building, somewhat resembling a temple (interestingly, Brazil is one of the few countries in South America with no clear Incan, Mayan, or Aztec roots).
The school is also protected by a spirit known as the Caipora, which are small and mischievous creatures that come out at night to watch over the school. Allegedly, these critters make Peeves the Poltergeist look positively tamed, considering a former Castelobruxo Headmistress, Benedita Dourado, offered to send former Hogwarts Headmaster Armando Dippet some Caipora (an offer which was politely declined).
Students from Castelobruxo are particularly adept in Magizoology and Herbology, and they wear bright green robes. You might have heard of one of their best-known alumni, Libatius Borage, who penned Advanced Potion-Making, among other textbooks, which serves as one of the core Potions textbooks at Hogwarts. If you're up to date on your Quidditch, you may also know of João Coelho, Captain of the Tarapoto Tree- Skimmers!
