Welcome to Back to School! Each edition of this blog will focus on the major wizarding schools of the world, with our first edition covering Beauxbatons Academy - otherwise known as Académie de Magie Beauxbâtons.
As the name suggests, this is the French wizarding school, situated somewhere near the Pyrenees mountains. One of the three largest schools in Europe, it hosts students from France and other Central and Western European students, such as Belgium, Spain, Luxembourg, Portugal, and the Netherlands.
Although in the Harry Potter films, Beauxbatons appears to be an all-girls' school, this is not the case - with famous male alumni including Nicholas Flamel, Davet Dumont, Vincent Duc de Trefle-Picques, and Luc Millefeuille.
Little is known about the school itself, but according to Beauxbatons students, the dining hall is elaborate and wood nymphs sing to the students during meals. There is also a fountain on the grounds which is said to have beautifying powers; it was named after Nicholas and Perenelle Flamel, and likely funded - along with much of the grounds and school - by the gold from the Philosopher's Stone.
Beauxbatons value order and structure, with students standing to attention when the Headteacher arrives, and poltergeists would not be tolerated. Their uniform is pale blue and made of silk, designed for the warmer climate of the South of France.
Beauxbatons has always had a friendly rivalry with Hogwarts and competed alongside Hogwarts and Durmstrang during the Triwizard Tournaments, boasting 62 wins. During the events of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the school champion was Fleur Delacour, who finished fourth. Beauxbatons are also known to be excellent at Wizard's Chess, and were undefeated by Hogwarts until the 1988-89 school year.
